Tre anni fa, a Wembley, l'immagine di Leonardo Bonucci e Giorgio Chiellini in festa con la Coppa a dire “ne dovete mangiare ancora di pastasciutta” è rimasta come il più terribile degli incubi per gli inglesi. Ora ci risiamo, a Berlino le cose non sono andate diversamente e il boccone è ancora amaro da mandar giù. E che le cose potessero non andar bene lo si era capito prima dell'inizio della finale contro la Spagna, autentica regina del torneo. Quando, a corredo della cerimonia di chiusura di Euro 2024, ha fatto il suo ingresso in campo Giorgio Chiellini, capitano dell'Italia che fu, per rimettere in gioco la coppa, un brivido ha irrigidito la schiena dei sudditi di Sua Maestà. Pioggia di fischi per l'ex-Juventus, che non ha affatto accusato il colpo, anzi, si è sciolto in un sorriso beffardo di chi sa di essere dalla parte giusta della storia, cioè di chi vince. Prima di congedarsi dal trofeo che l'Italia di Mancini ha custodito per tre anni, Chiellini ha compiuto un gesto che, di fatto, ha indirizzato il destino dell'europeo: ha baciato la coppa, come fosse una vecchia amica da salutare, e andando via ha accarezzato i nastrini giallorossi della Spagna, lasciando intonsi invece quelli biancorossi dell'Inghilterra. Un pizzico del quarto trionfo europeo spagnolo nella storia è indubbiamente il suo. Dopo la partita, Chiellini ai microfoni di Sky ha ammesso un po' di malinconia per il bel tempo che non è più: "Un po' di dispiacere c'è a ridare indietro la coppa. Il mio sogno era quello di consegnarlo all'Italia Purtroppo la meritano molto più di noi. Mi piacerebbe essere in campo, chiunque lo vorrebbe. Vedere l'entusiasmo del pubblico inglese mi dà un brivido positivo". Gli inglesi, intanto, dovranno fare i conti con due finali europee consecutive perse, record negativo di cui sono padroni, così come il loro ct, Gareth Southgate, vero e proprio Icaro capace di portare vicinissima al sole la sua squadra negli ultimi sei anni, finendo poi regolarmente bruciato. Per anni sogneranno il colosso Donnarumma impaurire gli avversari dal dischetto e quel maledetto ventisettenne di Eibar, tal Mikel Oyarzabal Ugarte, che ha infranto i sogni d'Albione. Due incubi sul prato verde che hanno portato il “football” ovunque, tranne che a casa dell'Inghilterra.
