Lo scienziato della Terra dei fuochi nella hit dei migliori al mondo

Milano, 11 giu. (Adnkronos Salute) - Lo scienziato della Terra dei fuochi scala la hit mondiale dei 'Best Medicine Scientists', classifica stilata dalla piattaforma Research.com. Antonio Giordano, una carriera fra Italia e Stati Uniti, che con i suoi studi ha dimostrato il link fra l'interramento illecito dei rifiuti controllato dalla camorra e i tumori in Campania, guadagna quest'anno la posizione numero 566 a livello mondiale e la numero 374 negli Usa nella disciplina Biologia e biochimica. "Alla mia età un grande traguardo, un orgoglio", commenta all'Adnkronos Salute l'oncologo e patologo napoletano, classe 1962, fra i più giovani del ranking. Allievo del premio Nobel americano James Dewey Watson al Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory diretto dal 'papà' della doppia elica del Dna, Giordano è presidente e fondatore della Sbarro Health Research Organization (Shro) presso la Temple University di Philadelphia, dove dirige l'Istituto Sbarro per la ricerca sul cancro e la medicina molecolare e il Centro di biotecnologie. Da questa parte dell'oceano è invece ordinario di Anatomia e istologia patologica all'università di Siena. In curriculum vanta diverse scoperte tra cui "il legame diretto tra la regolazione del ciclo cellulare e lo sviluppo del cancro - ricorda - con la dimostrazione che, affinché le cellule normali si trasformino in tumorali, è necessario che gli oncogeni interagiscano direttamente con le cicline, determinando una deregolazione del ciclo cellulare e quindi l'insorgenza del fenotipo neoplastico". Ricerche che "hanno permesso di identificare una nuova classe di farmaci contro i tumori del seno, del polmone e dell'ovaio - sottolinea - e contro il mesotelioma", il cancro da amianto che Giordano conosce anche come "figlio d'arte". Suo padre Giovan Giacomo Giordano fu "uno fra i primi scienziati a studiare e a scoprire i gravissimi danni derivati dall'esposizione alle fibre di amianto. Anche grazie alle sue ricerche - evidenzia - l'amianto è stato messo fuori legge in Italia nel 1992 e a livello europeo dal 1999".
