Negli Stati Uniti, alcune aziende produttrici di tabacco starebbero tentando di aggirare le normative sulla salute pubblica sostituendo la nicotina contenuta nelle sigarette elettroniche con sostanze analoghe, che hanno quindi proprietà simili ma effetti sulla salute ancora sconosciuti. Queste sostanze, inoltre, non verrebbero neanche indicate correttamente sulla confezione.
