Due astronauti nello spazio: non si Sto arrivando! come farli tornare

Che il loro sia un “viaggio spaziale” è fuori da qualsiasi dubbio. Il problema è che lo è (e continua a esserlo) pure un po' troppo. Ché dovevano rimanere lassù, sù sù, a bordo della Iss, la Stazione spaziale internazionale, solo otto giorni, Barry Wilmore e Sunita Williams: ma poi quella settimana abbondante (iniziata il 5 giugno 2024) è diventata un soggiorno di due mesi e, adesso, la Nasa, cioè l'agenzia statunitense del programma spaziale, non c'è conferma ma nemmeno smentita, fa trapelare che di scendere, per i due astronauti americani, lui ha 61 anni, lei 58 e sono entrambi alla loro terza esperienza oltre l'atmosfera, forse non c'è verso prima di febbraio 2025. LA SPEDIZIONE Sfortuna o opportunità, quasi il plot di una serie di fantascienza: di certo nella prima missione della capsula spaziale Starliner qualcosa è andato storto. Serviva, infatti, quella spedizione, per verificare i sistemi di lancio, di attracco e di atterraggio perché la Starliner appartiene alla società Boeing (sì, la stessa che costruisce i nostri comunissimi, banalissimi, terrestri aeroplani) e ha ancora bisogno delle certificazioni (rilasciate proprio dalla Nasa) per diventare un veicolo privato autorizzato a “bucare” l'orbita del pianeta. La sua era, tra l'altro, una delle missioni spaziali più attese di quest'anno, ma di mezzo ci si sono messi i malfunzionamenti e, visto che nello spazio come quaggiù, la prima cosa da garantire è la sicurezza dell'equipaggio, la Nasa sostiene che farlo rientrare a queste condizioni potrebbe non essere la scelta migliore (aperta parentesi: la beffa, diciamo pure l'aspetto un po' ridicolo della vicenda, è che, probabilmente, la “navetta” che li riporterà coi piedi sulla Terra, sarà la Crew Dragon della SpaceX, ossia della società privata di Elon Musk, che è una delle pochissime concorrenti rivali proprio della Boeing, chiusa parentesi). La Boeing company di Seattle, un'industria che ha sulle spalle 108 annidi storia, è nata nel luglio del 1916 ed è un nome che col tempo è diventato sinonimo di “aereo”, ultimamente pare avere più guai che successi: dagli incidenti dei 737 Max (per due dei quali si è dichiarata colpevole nel corso di un'indagine, nonché la figuraccia del veivolo che in Alaska, a gennaio, ha perso una parte della fusoliera in volo), alla nomina, circa una decina di giorni fa, di un nuovo amministratore delegato chiamato a fare il miracolo (cioè a coprire, in un qualche modo, il buco di 1,4 miliardi di dollari di perdita registrato solo nel secondo trimestre di quest'anno per un calo di fatturato del meno 15% rispetto al 2023). IL LANCIO Il riscatto doveva venire dalla spazio, ma non è stato così. Già il lancio della Starliner, a giugno, a Cape Canaveral, ha subito una serie di ritardi e problemi tecnici che non hanno inaugurato col piede giusto la corsa extraterrestre della società. Poi ci sono stati generici, per quanto ne sappiamo, «malfunzionamenti» sui quali i test e le simulazioni sui propulsori hanno sostanzialmente concluso che potrebbe fare ritorno, ma non hanno spiegato effettivamente cosa sia successo quindi «la comunità della Nasa vorrebbe capire un po' meglio sia la causa a monte che la fisica», come sottolinea Steve Stich, che è il responsabile del programma dei voli commerciali della Boeing (la quale non è d'accordo con la Nasa, ma tant'è: per adesso è tutto fermo. Tranne Wiliams e Wilmore che continuano a fluttuare a 408 chilometri dalla superficie terrestre, in assenza di gravità).
