Kenya, il trasloco delle giraffe per portare pace tra le comunità

Roma, 22 lug. (askanews) - In Kenya alcune giraffe sono state sedate da veterinari per essere poi trasferite a centinaia di chilometri di distanza. Una volta colpite, si accasciano stordite e vengono immobilizzate. Ma legare in sicurezza, sollevare e poi caricare il grande animale dal collo e dalle gambe lunghe è un'operazione complessa e delicata che deve essere eseguita dai ranger in sicurezza. In totale, in una fattoria di Sergoit, nella parte Occidentale del Paese, sono state prelevate otto giraffe che sono state reinsediate nella Ruko Conservancy della contea di Baringo. Il loro "trasloco" è parte di un'iniziativa che ha lo scopo di allentare le tensioni tra due comunità che risalgono a 20 anni prima. Un conflitto per un furto di bestiame che però aveva provocato anche morti e spinto molti ad abbandonare la loro terra, così come molte giraffe ad allontanarsi (la Baringo è la seconda sottospecie di giraffa ed è tra le specie più minacciate al mondo) La giraffa viene vista adesso come "un simbolo di pace", spiega Rebby Sebei, direttore della riserva. E l'arrivo degli animali viene celebrato come una festa con canti e danze tradizionali. Gli esemplari sono stati selezionati nell'ottica di preservare la specie e facilitare la riproduzione sia di quelle rimaste nell'area originaria che di quelle arrivate nella nuova riserva, assicurano i ranger e i veterinari che hanno preso parte all'operazione.
