"Parliamo di uno dei migliori giocatori al mondo, sempre complicato da affrontare. Lui sceglie il colpo giusto al momento giusto". Così il russo Daniil Medvedev riconosce a Jannik Sinner grandi meriti dopo essere stato battuto ai quarti degli Us Open. Non sono soddisfatto del modo in cui ho giocato – ha detto ancora il russo –, anche perché in campo ero teso. Non sono contento di me stesso e giustamente vado a casa. Il tennis è fatto di oscillazioni: ho giocato meglio nel secondo e nel quarto set, mentre il terzo è stato peggio del primo. Qui è difficile controllare i rimbalzi delle palline, su questi campi è sempre complicato". E un certo nervosismo, in effetti, Medvedev lo ha dimostrato anche dopo un super-punto di Sinner, che ha scaldato il pubblico dell'Arthur Ashe mentre il russo si è fermato a protestare con l'arbitro, abbastanza inspiegabilmente. Un momento diventato la fotografia perfetta del match, con Jannik che di fatto ha dato una lezione di tennis al temibile rivale: 6-2 1-6 6-1 6-4 dopo due ore e 39 minuti di gioco, il punteggio che spalanca al numero uno del mondo le porte del sogno. Perché fuori anche l'Orso Russo - tre volte finalista sul cemento newyorkese, compreso il successo del 2021 -, né il prossimo rivale Jack Draper nè il vincente del derby a stelle e strisce fra Frances Tiafoe e Taylor Fritz sembrano poter fermare la corsa di Jannik, o almeno di questo Jannik. Un cammino in crescendo, visto che il 23enne di San Candido dopo le incertezze mostrate nel primo set giocato a Flushing Meadows contro McDonald, sta lasciando ai rivali solo le briciole. "Una vittoria meritatissima e molto importante per il momento in cui capita. Ci aiuta a dimenticare tutto più velocemente e ci proietta in semifinale dove siamo favoriti", è stato il commento a caldo di Angelo Binaghi, presidente della Federazione Italiana Tennis e Padel. "Credo ci siano stati momenti di tennis di altissimo livello - ha spiegato Binaghi a SuperTennis -. Il match sarebbe potuto girare ancora nel quarto per due palle, e il quinto sarebbe stato un grande problema. Nel secondo set, che abbiamo perso, siamo andati sotto 0-5 ma con palla per vincere il game in tutti i giochi. Siamo stati anche un po' sfortunati. Se vediamo questi set e il primo giocato al primo turno contro McDonald, sembrano passati cinque anni e non dieci giorni".
