Nuova Zelanda, funerali del re Maori Tuheitia: gli succede la figlia

Auckland, 5 set. (askanews) - I Maori della Nuova Zelanda hanno dato l'addio al loro re, Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, con una grande cerimonia lungo il fiume Waikato ad Auckland. Dopo le danze tradizionali un corteo di "wakas", le tipiche canoe da guerra, ha trasportato la bara. Re Tuheitia è morto lo scorso 30 agosto a 69 anni, pochi giorni dopo aver subito un intervento chirurgico al cuore. Governava da 18 anni; gli è succeduta come regina la sua unica figlia di 27 anni. È una novità per i Maori, alla ricerca di una nuova leader giovane. La regina Nga Wai hono i te po Paki è stata acclamata durante una cerimonia di intronizzazione nell'Isola del Nord alla quale hanno partecipato migliaia di persone. È stata condotta al trono da un gruppo di uomini tatuati e a torso nudo che portavano lance cerimoniali, mentre un coro di donne vestite di nero ha cantato in suo onore. Con una corona di foglie in testa e una collana di osso di balena al collo, la nuova regina si è seduta accanto alla bara del padre mentre venivano intonate preghiere e una canzone.
