Positivo per oltre 600 giorni, oggi è morto il 72enne olandese: Covid, il caso più tragico

Oltre 600 giorni positivo al Covid. Quasi due anni di agonia. Alla fine, il 72enne olandese, che ha combattuto strenuamente contro la malattia, non ce l'ha fatta a sopravvivere. L'anziano paziente è morto nell'ottobre del 2023, ma il suo caso è tornato improvvisamente d'attualità grazie a una studentessa che ne parlerà al Congresso ESCMID. Il caso dell'uomo rappresenta un vero e proprio record: sarebbe lui infatti il paziente rimasto positivo al Covid per più tempo al mondo. È entrato in ospedale ad Amsterdam nel febbraio del 2022 fino a quando è morto nell'ottobre 2023: 613 giorni in tutto. Nessun paziente registrato è arrivato a 20 mesi di malattia consecutivi; alle spalle dell'uomo un altro caso è arrivato a 505 giorni di fila. La studentessa di medicina Magda Vergouwe, appartenente al Centro medico dell'Università di Amsterdam nei Paesi Bassi, presenterà il caso del 72enne al Congresso globale ESCMID. Il caso ha destato particolare interesse anche in virtù delle condizioni di salute dell'uomo. Stando a quanto spiegato dai medici, il paziente aveva una grave carenza di globuli bianchi e un sistema immunitario molto compromesso a causa del cancro. Il virus del Covid, che non riusciva a essere debellato dall'organismo, è mutato innumerevoli volte per continuare a proliferare all'interno dell'uomo, tanto che si era arrivati a parlare di una supervariante sviluppata solo da lui.
