Prorogata la custodia in Groenlandia al fondatore Sea Shepherd Watson

Roma, 4 set. (askanews) - Paul Watson - attivista e ambientalista canadese con cittadinanza statunitense, fondatore e presidente di Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, ong che lotta per la tutela della fauna ittica e contro la caccia alle balene - si era detto "fiducioso" prima di entrare nel tribunale a Nuuk, capitale del territorio autonomo danese della Groenlandia, dove è stato arrestato lo scorso 21 luglio. L'attivista è accusato dal Giappone di aver danneggiato una delle sue navi baleniere nell'Antartico nel 2010 e di aver ferito un marinaio. La corte ha tuttavia deciso di estendere la sua detenzione fino al 2 ottobre - scrive la Paul Watson Foundation su Facebook - in attesa della decisione sulla sua estradizione in Giappone. Al suo arrivo Watson aveva dichiarato: "Spero che riusciremo a vedere alcuni risultati oggi. Avranno la possibilità di esaminare le prove e se guarderanno le prove, tutto dovrebbe andare bene. Il Giappone dovrebbe essere sotto processo per le sue attività illegali", ha poi accusato. "È già stato condannato dalla Corte Internazionale di Giustizia, è stato condannato dalla Corte Federale Australiana e dalla Commissione Baleniera Internazionale. Mi stanno semplicemente usando come capro espiatorio per vendicarsi dello spettacolo televisivo", ha aggiunto. "Come mi sento? Beh, sono fiducioso che riusciremo a risolvere questo problema oggi".
