Il presidente ucraino, Volodymyr Zelensky, ha riferito che l'incursione militare nella regione russa di Kursk mira a creare una zona cuscinetto. Si tratta della prima volta che Zelensky riferisce in modo chiaro l'obiettivo dell'operazione, lanciata il 6 agosto. In precedenza, aveva affermato che mirava a proteggere le comunità nella regione confinante di Sumy dai bombardamenti costanti. "Il nostro compito principale nelle operazioni difensive in generale ora è distruggere il più possibile il potenziale bellico russo e condurre al massimo le azioni controffensive. Ciò include la creazione di una zona cuscinetto sul territorio dell'aggressore, la nostra operazione nella regione di Kursk", afferma.
