Washington, 23 lug. (askanews) - La direttrice del Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, si è dimessa, riportano i media americani, un giorno dopo aver riconosciuto che l'agenzia ha fallito nella sua missione di prevenire l'attentato contro Donald Trump, candidato repubblicano alla presidenza Usa. Cheatle ha dovuto far fronte a richieste bipartisan di dimettersi dopo che un uomo armato di 20 anni ha ferito all'orecchio Trump durante un comizio elettorale lo scorso 13 luglio in Pennsylvania. Le dimissioni arrivano all'indomani dell'audizione in Commissione alla Camera in cui la direttrice ha ammesso "il fallimento" del Secret Service. Subito dopo la notizia Trump ha scritto sul social Truth: "L'amministrazione Biden/Harris non mi ha protetto adeguatamente e sono stato costretto a prendere una pallottola per la democrazia. È STATO UN GRANDE ONORE FARLO!".
