Australia, morto uno dei due pinguini gay di Sidney

È morto all'età di 11 anni Sphen, il partner più anziano di una coppia di pinguini dello stesso sesso famosa in tutto il mondo e celebrata nei libri di testo australiani e in una parata annuale per i diritti gay. Sphen e il suo compagno pinguino Gentoo Magic, che ora ha 8 anni, hanno attirato l'attenzione internazionale nel 2018 quando hanno costruito insieme un nido di ciottoli nella speranza di allevare dei pulcini "adottati" da una pinguina deceduta nella loro casa nel Sea Life Sydney Aquarium. La loro unione è stata celebrata con un carro al Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, incluso nel curriculum scolastico statale del Nuovo Galles del Sud con sede a Sydney e discusso nella serie Netflix 'Atypical'. La loro relazione è stata anche registrata in libri e documentari cinematografici. I compagni di pinguino condividono i loro doveri genitoriali e le coppie dello stesso sesso in cattività, già in passato, hanno occasionalmente adottato delle uova. L'acquario ha affermato in una dichiarazione che Sphen è morto questo mese. Non ha detto quando il pinguino è morto né ha rivelato la causa del decesso. La durata media della vita della specie è di 12-13 anni, ha riferito l'acquario. Il direttore generale dell'acquario Richard Dilly ha descritto Sphen come una "icona" che ha avuto un impatto positivo sul mondo attraverso la sua relazione unica con Magic. "La storia d'amore tra Sphen e Magic ha affascinato il mondo ed è stato un onore accogliere fan locali e internazionali, alcuni dei quali hanno viaggiato per lunghe distanze per vederli dal vivo", ha affermato Dilly. "Sphen e Magic condividevano un legame diverso dalla maggior parte delle altre coppie di pinguini: potevano persino essere trovati insieme al di fuori della stagione riproduttiva, il che è unico per i pinguini gentoo", ha aggiunto Dilly. Gli addetti alla cura degli animali hanno portato Magic a vedere il corpo del suo compagno per aiutarlo a capire che non sarebbero stati più insieme nella prossima stagione riproduttiva. "Nel momento in cui gli abbiamo mostrato Sphen, Magic ha iniziato a cantare, e poi anche gli altri pinguini si sono uniti a lui, cantando con lui. Quindi è stato molto toccante", ha affermato la supervisore dell'acquario Renee Howell. "Non credo che ci fosse un occhio asciutto nella mostra dei pinguini in quel momento", ha aggiunto Howell.
