Bernard Foy, come accade praticamente ogni giorno da vent'anni, vede uscire da casa la moglie, Nelly, per andare a lavorare. Lui resta ad aspettarla, a parti invertite, ma questo gli pesa poco; quel che invece non riesce a dominare è un senso di incredulità all'idea che Nelly possa amarlo ancora, con lo stesso trasporto, visto che lui ha perso entrambe le mani saltando su una mina in guerra e non si sente più un vero uomo. Del resto, lei ha sempre avuto bisogno dell'amore fisico ed è una donna ancora più desiderabile di quando l'ha incontrata. Bernard continua a guardare quel che succede nel quartiere dalla finestra, dal balcone, sente i rumori della strada e del palazzo in cui abita in modo preciso, amplificato, come se il suo orecchio fosse diventato ipersensibile, mentre le ore passano in attesa di Nelly, con un malessere che cresce fino a diventare fisico. Le cose peggiorano quando la donna comincia ad aiutare un giovane illustratore che la poliomielite ha inchiodato su una sedia a rotelle e che si è trasferito al primo piano del loro palazzo. (...)
