Sono 151 i morti e 186 i feriti in India per le frane causate dalle forti piogge che hanno colpito i villaggi collinari del distretto di Wayanad nello Stato meridionale del Kerala. Il portavoce del governatore del Kerala ha aggiunto che non si hanno notizie di 187 persone. Sono 77 i corpi identificati finora, che perlopiù sono stati riconsegnati alle famiglie. Le frane si sono verificate dopo che le piogge torrenziali hanno scatenato torrenti di fango e acqua che hanno travolto piantagioni di tè e villaggi. Sono oltre 300 i soccorritori impegnati per provare a trovare ed estrarre dalle macerie le persone bloccate sotto fango e detriti. La prima frana si è verificata alle 2 del mattino di martedì, seguita da un'altra due ore dopo. Diverse aree, tra cui Meppadi, Mundakkai e Chooralmala, sono rimaste isolate e le strade sono state spazzate via causando danni immensi alle abitazioni, ha dichiarato il governatore del Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan. I media locali hanno riferito che la maggior parte delle vittime erano lavoratori delle piantagioni di tè.
